A fuel crisis hit Shimla today, leaving scores of vehicles stranded at various petrol pumps. Long queues were witnessed at fuel stations in the town and across the district. People could get only small quantities of fuel.
The crisis is a fallout of a problem at the Ambala oil dump station that feeds Shimla and adjoining areas.
Director, Food and Civil Supplies, R.S. Gupta said, 8220;The problem started after September 29, when there was a hoax bomb call in one of the tankers lined up at Ambala and the police started checking, which delayed transportation of the fuel to Shimla.8221; The one-day delay in the supply has built up the crisis and the situation will take time to return to normal.
However, he assured that the crisis was not severe and is expected to be resolved by Tuesday, for which the state coordinator of the Indian Oil Corporation is specially camping at Chandigarh.
Gupta said the fuel supply at petrol pumps in Shimla was enough to maintain demand and supply equilibrium and since there is nothing in the reserves of the fuel stations, some consumers must have been asked to take less fuel.
With Durga Pooja holidays this is the peak tourist season and many tourist vehicles were also seen stranded at the petrol pumps.
