PUNE, Nov 3: Environmnet activist advocate Netra Prakash Bhog has welcomed the recommendations made by Union Minister for Environment Suresh Prabhu who has suggested imposition of FSI curbs in all the cantonment boards across the country.

Taking the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) as a model where FSI restrictions have been imposed since 1982, the Minister suggested the cantonment boards falling under the jurisdiction of other commands should also take a cue and begin imposing these restrictions.

It may be mentioned here that FSI restrictions were first imposed in the Pune Cantonment Board in 1982 following when by Lt Gen T S Oberoi was the General Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Command. Following this step, FSI restrictions were imposed in all the cantonment boards falling under the jurisdiction of the Southern Command.

Welcoming the recommendations of the minister, Bhog pointed out that there was a sudden spurt in activity in most cantonments resulting in unplanned growth. There has to be some kind of curbs on the carrying capacity of the building and a proper development plan for every cantonment, he observed.

Primarly, military areas were segregated for military purposes and training of the personnel, he said, adding that the traffic congestion had increased to such an extent that steps may be soon required to take necessary measures and prevent further deterioration in traffic conditions.
