Policy8217;s implementation cost of Rs 400 crore to be shared by Centre and state

From the next academic year 2009-2010, all children in the state between the age of six and 14 years will get free and compulsory education, as per the national law policy.

A senior officer from the State Education Department said, 8220;We are waiting for the primary objectives and issues from the Central government. The policy will come into affect as soon as we get it.8221;

State Education Minister Ramanlal Vora, however, told Newsline: 8220;We already have a state policy of free and compulsory education for kids between six and 14 years of age, and it is being followed from a long time. We do not have details of the national policy at present. So before commenting on it, I need to check its contents. As of now, I cannot say when we can start work on it.8221;

Maya Kodnani, Minister of State, Women and Child Welfare and Higher Education, said, 8220;The state is already committed when it comes to education. Whether the Centre makes a policy or not, the state already has its own policy and we keep upgrading it from time to time.8221;

8220;Through our various state policies, we are way ahead of national education policies. Moreover, everyone knows the way Gujarat is progressing in the education sector,8221; she added.

The national policy8217;s implementation will cost Rs 400 crore, which will be shared by the Centre and the state.
