Four Surat cops suspended for negligence at Modi function

The Surat Police Commissioner has suspended four of his staff, including three women constables, who were on duty during a function attended by Chief Minister Narendra Modi at Khatodara on Sunday.

The Surat Police Commissioner has suspended four of his staff, including three women constables, who were on duty during a function attended by Chief Minister Narendra Modi at Khatodara on Sunday. The four were guarding the main entrance of the venue where a group of women entered with banners seeking rescue of a kidnapped girl.

According to the police, a group of 14, including 13 women, entered the Surat Raktdan Kendra building with banner displaying 14 varsh ni chokri ne apharan kartao thi mukti apavo rescue a 14-year-old girl from kidnappers.

They said Jyoti, daughter of one Baliram Mishra, had been kidnapped by some unidentified people from near her house some time ago. Mishra, they claimed, had contacted the local police and even Commissioner RMS Brar, but failed to get a proper response.

After learning about the incident, the policemen on duty rushed to the venue and arrested Mishra along with 13 others and took them to the Umra police station. They were later released on bail.

The next day, Brar ordered an inquiry under S G Gohil, Assistant Commissioner of Police F Division, against the police staff deployed at the entrance. Gohil took statements of all the police staff who were on duty that day and submitted his report to Brar.

On the basis of this report, Brar on Wednesday suspended Sub-Inspector BM Vasawa Umra police station, and constables Tahera Mohammed Women police station Aruna Ashok Mahidharpura police station and Bharti Mahendra Katargam police station.

Brar said: 8220;On the report submitted by ACP Gohil, we have taken this step. We will also take strict action against Udhna Inspector A K Qureshi, who was given charge of the entire function.8221;
