
CHANDIGARH, Aug 25: Four persons booked by the city police way back in 1994 for allegedly raping one Shakuntala in a house in Manimajra were today acquitted of the charge by Additional District and Sessions Judge G.S. Sandhu.
Devinder Pal Singh, Balwinder Singh, Satish Kumar and Manoj Kumar were booked here on December 6, 1994, on charges of kidnapping the girl, raping her and also keeping her in wrongful confinement.
The girl had stated that one day about five persons had come to her house and, at pistol point, directed her to accompany them to a police station. However, she alleged, she was taken to a house in Manimajra and raped by the men.
Arguing on the case, the defence counsel stated that the girl had appeared before the then JMIC A.K. Jain and said that she did not identify the accused. He added that the girl also gave an affidavit before Additional Sessions Judge I.C. Aggarwal stating that the accused were not involved in the case.
On the question of the police recovering bangles from the site of incident, the defence counsel argued that the sample of bangles was sent after 23 days. He said that there was no medical report to establish that the girl was raped.
2-year RI for causing injury
A city court today convicted city resident Raj Kumar for voluntarily causing serious injury to another and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of two and a half years.
Holding the accused guilty of offences under sections 323 simple injury and 326 grievous injury of IPC, UT Judicial Magistrate Ist Class A.K. Bishnoi also directed the accused to undergo six months simple imprisonment for his offence under Section 323 of the IPC. The convict was further told to pay a fine of Rs 500 and to undergo further RI of six months in case of default of payment.
The accused was booked here on May 25, 1996, under sections 323, 324 and 326 of IPC on the complaint of one Deepak. He was charged with hitting one Mohan Lal in the head with a sharp-edged weapon. The incident occurred when Mohan Lal was going towards Sector 32 from Sector 34.
The accused intercepted Mohan on the way and asked him to pay his dues. When Mohan refused Raj Kumar hit him on the head. He also hit Deepak who tried to settle the dispute.
