August 24: Four US fighters 8212; four more than two years ago 8212; advanced to the quarter-finals of the World Amateur Boxing championships yesterday.

Unlike 1997, when no American managed to get past the second round, featherweight Ricardo Juarez, bantamweight Clarence Vinson, heavyweight Michael Bennett and light heavyweight Michael Simms Jr. All advanced to the quarter-finals, giving the US team a total of six fighters in that round.

Brian Viloria, of Waipahu, Hawaii, advanced in the 48 kg class on Sunday as did John Medina, of Fort Carson, Colorado, at 50.8 kg.

In the only other bout involving a US fighter yesterday, Mahammat Abdullaev of Uzbekistan defeated Ricardo Williams Jr of Cincinnati 11-4 in a 63 kg fight.

Juarez, a two-time National champion from Houston, had the most impressive second-round victory as he upset highly regarded Falk Huste of Germany 12-6.

Huste won the silver medal at the 1997 World Championships in Hungary and he was the 1998 European champion.

A three-time National champion, the 21-year-old Vinson of Washington DC, beat Gennadiy Ozarynsky of Ukraine 7-2. Vinso utilised his superior hand speed to beat Ozarynsky to the punch, doubled up with his jab and got the better of the exchanges. Constantly moving and shifting directions, Vinson made himself a elusive target for his taller opponent.
