HISAR, Nov 5: In a significant development, global scientists, who have converged here to attend the `International Conference on Food Security,' have adopted - `the Hisar Declaration' and gave a call to ensure food for all.A seven-point action plan was also chalked out to achieve the objective. Experts from many countries appealed to the world community to recognise and accept the declaration.According to the document, the scientists unanimously resolved, ``We face immense pressures in the global environment, resulting from industrial emissions, continuous growth of population and depletion of natural resources. As scientists, we consider answers that will ensure adequate food for our increasing world population, while preserving natural resources and the environment''.They also resolved, ``We must work together to achieve the goal of global long-term sustainability. In essence, we must recognise that the Earth belongs to all people and no privileged group or country should dominate it.''Presenting dismal figures, the document added: ``More than 800 million people suffer from hunger and malnutrition in Africa, Asia, Latin America and even Europe. In addition, one-and-a-half billion people suffer from scarcity of water and more than two billion have no access to energy sources.''It further added, ``Agriculture will play an increasingly essential role in the future, not only in food production for the expanding population, but also as a producer of bio-fuels and raw materials for industry.''Scientists, attending the meet, also offered for the first time, multi-disciplinary approaches to the issues relevant to sustainable life support systems spanning from molecular studies to field evaluations.
