NEW DELHI, JUNE 14: Food Corporation of India North Zone claimed the Delhi Soccer Association 8212; Oriental Bank Institutional Football League Championship title for the fifth successive time when they edged past last year8217;s runners-up Nothern Railway 1-0 in the final match held at Ambedkar Stadium here today.
It was Railways who won the hearts of soccer-lovers by displaying a good brand of soccer but were unlucky in not capitalising easy goal-scoring chances which came in their way time and again during the proceedings of the match.
Railways8217; mid-fielder Harish Bisht and Mohd. Atiq combining well, initiated some good moves from both flanks but forwards Bhupender Sharma and Vimal Thapa fumbled near the goal-mouth.
Even FCI8217;s custodian Pujat Guha excelled under the bar in thwarting the onslaughts of the Railwaymen. The all-important goal for FCI came in the run of play when outside-left Bhupender Singh Rawat sent a well-measured cross from the left flank on which inside-right Sanjeev Bhalla chipped an header which came to the unmarked veteran and National referee Rizwan-ul-Haq, son of former international referee late Ikram-ul-Haq, who did not make any mistake in fiunding the net in the 32nd minute. That goal sealed the fate of the Railwaymen.
On changing ends, both teams played an attacking game and their players mounted heavy pressure against each other8217;s area but forwards Trilok Singh Bisht, B.S. Rawat of FCI and Shyam Kumar, Vimal Thapa and Bupender Sharma and Aftab Ashraf muffed easy chances.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President and DSA8217;s former President Subash Chopra distributed the prizes to the players.
