GURGAON, October 8: A gang of armed robbers struck at five liquor vends here last night and robbed them of about Rs 80,000 and 41 bottles of expensive liquor.

The police believes that the incidents could be the consequence of a “business rivalry” among the liquor contractors. The series of robberies began around 4.30 p.m. when two persons arrived at a vend on the MDI Chowk in a white Maruti car to purchase beer. The vend’s salesman, Jagdish Rana, told Express Newsline that after they had finished the beer, the robbers whipped out pistols and entered the vend. “They fired shots to intimidate us, took the cash box and escaped in their car,” he said.

The second incident took place on the New Railway Road. According a salesman, four men with pistols entered the shop around 9.45 p.m and asked everybody to sit down. “While two stood guard at the entrance, the other two asked me to hand over the cash,” he added. While leaving, the robbers helped themselves to bottles of expensive whiskey and beer cans. Barely half an hour later, the wine shops at Palam Vihar and at the Delhi road near MUL were robbed in a similar fashion.

Santosh Kumar, a salesman, said that 4 to 5 men came at their vend at around 10.20 p.m. “They pointed pistols at us and asked us to open the gate. While entering they hit another salesman, Jage Ram in the ribs. The robbers even took out some liquor bottles and forcibly handed them over to a customer who happened to be visiting the vend. The poor man ran for his life,” Santosh recalls. The looting spree culminated at the liquor vend near Maruti Udyog from where the robbers took away cash boxes from a vend selling IMFL and an adjoining vend at around 10.30 p.m.
