Five arrested for extortion in Muchipara

Five persons were arrested from Muchipara on Sunday on charges of threatening and attempting to extort Rs 5 lakh from a businessman.

Five persons were arrested from Muchipara on Sunday on charges of threatening and attempting to extort Rs 5 lakh from a businessman.

Rajesh Verma, a trader from Dhiren Dhar Sarani, received a phone call from extortionists on Saturday night threatening him to pay the extortion amount by Sunday morning, the police said.

The caller also threatened the businessman with dire consequences if he dared to inform the sleuths.

Not paying any heed to the threat, Verma told the police about the call, after which several policemen in casual wear were deployed in front of his house. The gang was apprehended when it was entering Verma8217;s residence to collect the money in the morning.

According to the police, all the members of the gang have criminal record and one of them, Indrajit Deb, was wanted in a murder case at Patrasayar in Bankura.

Two of Deb8217;s aides, Madhai Das and Debashis Chanda, were arrested in a robbery case in Taltala earlier, said a senior officer of the Muchipara police station.

Two other members of the gang, Kailash Das and Subhankar Dolui, were also involved in making crude bombs, he added.

The accused were booked under Sections 387 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and remanded in judicial custody by a city court, the police said.
