
Two persons, including a two-year-old, died and four others were injured in a major fire that broke out in a building at Johri Bazaar, Kalbadevi, on Tuesday. According to the fire department, the fire was caused by a short circuit and gutted almost the whole building. The injured, including a fireman, were rushed to the JJ Hospital and Bombay Hospital. One of the victims has been identified as 55-year-old Laxminarayan Nemichand.
Vrindavan, the five-storey building that caught fire, houses a branch of Vijaya Bank and some other offices and residences. According to fire officials, 12 fire engines, 6 water tanks and 3 ambulances were rushed to the spot. The building was almost completely gutted though the cooling operations by the Fire Brigade continued till late in the day.
One of the residents, Monica Baheti, threw her two-year-old child from the first floor of the building into the hands of the crowd in a bid to save her. Unfortunately, the baby succumbed to her head injuries. Baheti threw her other child also who luckily survived.
Baheti suffered multiple internal injuries and burn injuries and is being treated. Another injured, Pankaj Patel 38, who sustained multiple injuries was reported to be in a stable condition by Tuesday evening.
8220;Considering the injured lost their homes and property, Bombay Hospital will treat the injured free-of-cost,8221; said Dr Ashish Tiwari, spokesperson for Bombay Hospital.
