
South Africa8217;s Monde Zondeki broke a record stand and dismissed Brian Lara cheaply but West Indies marched on to 405 for three on the fourth day of the fourth Test on Monday.
Opener Chris Gayle improved his career best score to an undefeated 245 and Shivnarine Chanderpaul was 12 not out.
Gayle8217;s previous highest score was 204 against New Zealand in Grenada in 2002. West Indies had resumed on 299 for one in reply to South Africa8217;s first innings of 588 for six declared and Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan took their partnership to 331 before Sarwan8217;s slashed drive to a ball from Zondeki was caught low down by Ashwell Prince at backward point.
Sarwan scored a disciplined 127, with 14 fours and two sixes, and his dismissal ended West Indies8217; biggest stand for any wicket against South Africa.
Lara, celebrating his 36th birthday, changed his gloves twice before getting off the mark with the 20th ball he faced.
