CHENNAI: Kings Gambit is an old-fashioned opening and is known for its sharpness. Alexey Fedorov of Belarus brushed up the Kings Gambit against world champion Viswanathan Anand in the fourth round of the Corus Super category chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee on Wednesday and returned a happy man as he earned a half point without much effort.

Anand, accepting the gambit, was slightly inferior at one stage and had to give the pawn. After the Queens got exchanged on move 14, the ending was in sight with rooks and opposite coloured bishops on the board. After Fedorov’s 23rd move, the game was drawn on mutual agreement. The game lasted only two hours.

Hari draws first game: India’s teenaged prodigy Pentyala Harikrishna who came here just a day before the group B of the Corus 2001 Chess Grandmasters Tournament began, opted to play for a quick draw against Germany’s Thomas Luther in less than two hours of the first round of the event this afternoon, UNI adds from Wijk Aan Zee. At the Corus International, alongside the high-profile group A event, which features Viswanathan Anand and Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik among others there is also the group B event which features quite a few strong players like Mikhail Gurevich and Boris Gulko. Harikrishna has been specially invited for the event along with another prodigious youngster Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan. Within 17 moves, the players had exchanged all major pieces and the game was drawn.
