
SOLAPUR, Sept 10: After a lull of more than three weeks, the rain has registered its presence in the all talukas of the district providing solace to farmers who were eagerly waiting to save their crops.
Though the district is widely known for the rabbi crop, this time the farmer had decided to take the advantage of kharif crop also due to the good rain last year. The kharif area in the district is 23 thousand hectare which shows the real expectation of the farmers but the dream couldn8217;t come true due to the lower rainfall in August when the crops really needs rain for full growth.
In June when the farmers completed sowing, the rainfall in the district was 121.1 mm, 10 mm more than the required figure. Later in July it was 96.2 mm where as the require figuredwas 101.2. But the real problem started when rain failed to appear in August. In August 96 mm rain was required for the grown up crops but only 28.9 mm rainfall was registered putting farmers in deep trouble. It was a dry spell.
Now since the last three days the rain has struck the district and in just three days it has registered more than 60 mm in all talukas. The Akkalkot taluka has touched the figure of 84 mm in the last two days while Barshi 15 mm, Mohol 72 mm, Pandharpur 39 mm, Madha 113.4 mm, Sangola 62 mm, Mangalvedha 93 mm, North Solapur 39.3 mm, South Solapur 39.3 mm, Malshiras 99 mm, and Karmala 22 mm.
Though the district has received good rainfall in the two days, it is said that it would not save the kharif crop totally and the the farmers will get use it is fodder for their animal.
The Zilla Parishad Agricultare Department has geared up to assess the damage to the kharif crop in the district. The District Collector has decided to convene a meeting of all Tehsildars of the district in the coming week to recieve the report of the kharif situation in the different talukas to extend a helping hand to the farmers. In the last season the crop was damaged due to the excess rain.
