NEW DELHI, January 24: For 26-year-old Aseem Sharma the thought of a policeman sends a chill down his spine. Sharma was mercilessly beaten up by some policemen on the night of January 9, when they mistook him for a ruffian.
At around 10.15 pm, Sharma decided to go to the nearby dhaba to buy some food, as his wife was unwell. quot; But since the food there was over, I was going back home. Shortly, two policemen on their motorcycles came from behind and asked me if I was Ashwini. I replied in the negative, quot; said Sharma, a transporter, living in Sagarpur in New Delhi.
Sharma was then packed off in the Gypsy and takento police station in Dabri without anybody at his house being informed.
At 3.30 am two policemen, Babulal and Ashok, came to inform Ritu, Sharma8217;s newly married wife that her husband was in police custody.
quot;My mother-in-law and I went to the police station. We saw my husband sitting in front of a room-heater on a chair in a semi-conscious state and he was running high fever, quot; said Ritu.
However, the police permitted Ritu to take her husband only on the condition that she wrote in the register that Sharma was mentally disturbed.
quot;On reaching home I noticed that not only was he Sharma badly injured but even his gold chain, watch and wallet were missing, quot; said Ritu.
Later Sharma approached the area DCP and sought assistance in punishing the culprits.
