A team of experts at Patiala Medical College and Hospital today examined the eyes recovered from the accused in the eye scam, and said that they were of humans. Meanwhile, the cops have also recovered the knife used by the accused, Sunil, to take out the eyes from the bodies at Ambala Civil Hospital. Patiala SP (D) GS Chauhan told The Indian Express that the eyes examined by the experts’ panel would be sent to Chandigarh for DNA test. “We will take DNA samples of the deceased’s family member to match them,” he added. Senior police officials said they would get important leads in the case only after the arrest of Dr Neelima Sodhi, a co-accused. “Phone records show the nexus between all the accused, as the number of calls was more on days the eyes were to be collected,” they said. Rajpura CIA in-charge SS Cheema said crucial records at Aggarsain Hospital have not been maintained and the entry registers had no record of any visiting faculty member. Sources in the Police Department said the accused were visiting doctors at Aggarsain Hospital that charged a fixed amount for every operation and took no other responsibility towards the patients. “Interestingly, a nurse who joined the hospital a year back, when Dr Neelima also joined the hospital, had earlier worked with an eye specialist who was once arrested in another eye scam, but was later released by the court,” they said. “Sunil, an employee of Government Hospital, Ambala, used to deliver the bodies to the relatives after the post-mortem. He used to inform another accused, Manjit Verma, driver of the doctor couple who would come to Ambala and pay Rs 1,500 for a pair of eyes that Sunil provided him,” reads the FIR.
