8226; This refers to the report 8216;REDux8217; February 20. The authorities know that sources inimical to the country8217;s interests have been funding the Naxals to acquire sophisticated weapons. The inability of the Central and state governments to take them head on has emboldened them to spread their activities. The Naxals have been targeting the rural areas so far, but what would happen if they start including cities in their scheme of things? Why are our political leaders and the administration oblivious to this danger? The decision to call off the operation against the Naxals in Andhra Pradesh when the Greyhounds had some of their top leaders within its sights is inexplicable.

8226; I agree with Tavleen Singh8217;s 8216;A Passport to Dreary Sameness8217; February 20. Notwithstanding the assurance of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to make governance more 8216;8216;citizen-friendly, efficient and transparent8217;8217;, the system continues to follow the same stupid, outdated and cumbersome procedures, often making irrational demands of the person concerned. One wonders whether anything has changed for the better in procedures and administration over the last 50 years of our freedom. If in such cases people do not fall into the trap of greedy agents and corrupt and inefficient officials, where else do they go?

8226; Talveen Singh rightly says we are still a third-world country. Getting a passport requires such long formalities and so do other government actions like paying tax. If we want MNCs to come to India, we must make procedures simple for them. The infrastructure will have to be the best also. Unless we reform on these fronts, we will continue to remain a third-world country and should not dream of becoming a superpower.

8226; Supreme Court notices to cell companies, banks over telemarketing calls on mobiles 8216;Calling for privacy8217;, February 20 are welcome. The Court should also take note of the same in case of SMSes as well as landlines. The cell companies and banks also pester one with landline calls and SMSes at all times of day, on working days as well as holidays. These are not only a nuisance but also a waste of precious time.
