This refers to the report ‘‘Hell’s Angels’’. Bihar, one of the most backward States in the country, has gone to the dogs. The only two industries that flourish there are kidnapping and corruption. Anybody who is not ‘‘below the poverty line’’ faces the risk of abduction for ransom. A nexus of politicians and local mafia is involved in this thriving business. Bihar needs some urgent measures before anarchy sets in.

N K Singh’s column, ‘‘From the Alpine heights of Davos’’, highlighting the unusual yet far-sighted concept of the ‘‘economic implications of ageing’’ made interesting reading. However, India along with other developing nations would have gained more from Davos had there been a similar focus on harnessing the youth potential for growing economies.

With reference to Coomi Kapoor’s column, ‘‘Inside Track’’, our external affairs minister Natwar Singh has once again proved that he is living in the last century when he was the learned mascot of the then Congress government. Singh should align himself with the present and think about the future, rather than harping on his past laurels. The mentioned Collection of Essays hardly has any relevance to the present scenario in the subcontinent.

In her column, ‘‘America’s missionary zeal to impose democracy’’, Tavleen Singh’s comparison of President Bush’s imposition of democracy in Iraq with the activities of the Christian missionaries in colonial India is deplorable. It is always possible, and preferable, to disagree without making odious and damaging comparisons.

With reference to Tavleen Singh’s column, America’s ‘‘missionary zeal’’ has made it immune to logic and reason. Many people read today’s scenario as the West versus Islam, which is a highly dangerous line of thought. Radical Islamists can easily procure or build nuclear weapons. So, Bush may talk of democracy, but his foreign policy can endanger the whole world. In Iraq, there are no schools, hospitals, water and food supply, sanitation etc. Are these the right conditions for democracy?

This refers to Pamela Philipose’s column, ‘‘Chup-chap suniye, Me, Laloo Prasad’’. Laloo and Sonia share much in common. While the former rules Bihar, the latter rules the Congress party. Moreover, mostly unwanted persons seem to be elected. It is high time we amended our Constitution/ laws to ban any person who has been convicted or sentenced to jail from holding public offices like that of MP, MLA, Chief Minister or Governor.
