With reference to Tavleen Singh’s column, ‘‘Slight correction in good doctor’s prescription’’, I’d like to point out that as the Rajgarh MP, I’ve been a Member of the Lok Sabha since 1994, when we adopted Dr Manmohan Singh’s prescription on economic policy. Some of his colleagues had revolted on the issue then, quitting the Congress, only to rejoin it later. These are the people who will create problems in building a new India with infrastructure of international standard. They are now either sitting in the government with him, or form the kitchen cabinet of 10 Janpath. I left the Congress because of them, and also because I saw the good work being done in terms of improving the infrastructure by the NDA Government. The PM has to weed out the virus in his government, and act boldly, without caring for 10 Janpath. Only then can we expect some results. Also the media has to act more responsibly towards the development of this nation and not behave like gardeners of 10 Janpath.
Lakshman Singh

Tavleen Singh rightly points out that this is no time for committees or expert groups. It is the time for action. The ‘‘good doctor’’ appears to have surrounded himself with retired civil servants who have spent an entire lifetime dodging decisions and action through the mechanism of committees and task forces. The best reform they can suggest about the civil service is catching them young. Having served in the civil service for about 38 years, I feel that India needs a new type of governmental structure if we are to attain the status of a developed country.

I am a research associate in a Canadian University, working in the area of institutional change management. I agree with most of the points raised by Tavleen Singh about the state of Indian infrastructure. However, there is nothing wrong with Dr Manmohan Singh’s prescription. Instead, it is administering the prescription that should be made an issue, as there are committees which work and those which don’t.

Manmohan Singh is a capable, honest man who can deliver the goods for the nation. But he has to function independently of Sonia Gandhi’s will, and follow his conscience. If the reports are true, even his Independence Day speech was approved by her.

Tavleen Singh’s article serves as a guide to the Government. The reason why our country lags behind even tiny nations and islands is the massive corruption. Funds are sanctioned for development, but don’t reach the target.

I have been working for a multi-national company for 16 years. My job requires me to travel extensively. I was in Houston recently, where they are planning to expand a 12-lane road to 24 lanes in three years. It is time we started thinking big too. Our urban population is growing faster than in any other country, but we still talk of a 30-feet road. Why don’t we encourage the private sector to take a lead in our infrastructure projects?

In his column, ‘‘Soliloquies’’, Soli Sorabjee talks of prisoners’ conjugal rights. But there are so many of our countrymen, including those in the Army, who are separated from their wives. Are prisoners more special than them that they should be allowed the company of their wives? The examples of advanced western countries, allowing such rights to their prisoners, have no relevance for a nation like India.

With reference to Pamela Philipose’s column, ‘‘Don’t knock Oppn, it’s going great guns’’, Manmohan Singh rightly declined to accept the Opposition’s ‘‘suggestions’’ on the Union Budget. It is not possible to introduce any change in the Finance Bill without a parliamentary discussion. However, now that the BJP has installed a new Chief Minister in Madhya Pradesh, the PM should reciprocate by clearing his Cabinet of ‘‘tainted’’ ministers. There must be a bar on persons involved in crimes of personal nature like murder, kidnapping, corruption, rape, theft, dacoity and so on from contesting elections.
