Paul Scholes seized his World Cup chance to fill the gap in the England side left by Paul Gascoigne with an excellent goal in the 2-0 victory over Tunisia. The red-haired Manchester United forward might have scored twice in the first half but had to wait until the 89th minute to seal England8217;s victory in Group G.
But the moment was worth the wait, with Scholes firing home a superb right-foot shot of which Gascoigne himself would have been proud. There is only one Gascoigne but a spirited performance by Scholes meant one Paul made up for the absence of another. The goal in the first match any of the team had played in World Cup finals was the fourth for Scholes in just eight international appearances.
quot;That was his most difficult chance,quot; England captain Alan Shearer, who had headed England8217;s opening goal three minutes before the interval, said.
quot;If he needed to prove anything then he8217;s done it today because people are going to look to him to take on Paul Gascoigne8217;s role.quot;
While the unassuming Scholesshone there was no place in the side for his better-known Manchester United team mate David Beckham who lost his midfield spot to Darren Anderton.
Manager Hoddle also had words of praise for the 23-year-old Scholes who has helped Manchester United win a host of domestic honours.
Asked if he had been nervous, Scholes replied: quot;Yes, but once you are out on the pitch you just get on with it.quot; And as for comparisons with Gascoigne: quot;I don8217;t know. I just play the way I do. If people compare me with Paul Gascoigne I8217;m very flattered.quot;
