Ex-VSNL chief joins Reliance

MUMBAI, July 22: Former Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd VSNL chairman and managing director BK Syngal will join Reliance Telecom as its chairman. He is likely to take up his new appointment by the end of the month. Syngal8217;s decision to join Reliance Telecom comes just a fortnight after Ashwani Windlass, former managing director of Hutchison Max, decided to join the company as its vice chairman and managing director.

Fifty-eight-year-old Syngal, who retired as VSNL CMD on June 30, 1998, served in that position for seven years and retired after he was not granted a two-year extension by the government when the retirement age was increased to 60. Syngal, who holds a M Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, joins the Reliance fold with a range of experience in telecom. He worked with Inmarsat in London for nine years and was with the Department of Telecommunications for 19 years.
