Encroachments, parking woes and lack of sanitation are some of the problems that the residents of Sector 26 are faced with. A number of educational institutes, a grain market and a colony constitute a major share of the sector.
Despite a ban on polythenes in the city, its use in the Grain Market continues unabated with neither grocers nor customers complaining.
Manju, a resident of the area, says: 8220;Polythene may be banned in the city, but these are available here. I prefer using these. The market is relatively cleaner, but more care needs to be taken.8221;
The sector also houses the Bapu Dham colony. Encroachment is rampant in the area where houses, which were initially allotted to residents as single-storeyed are now multi-storeyed.
Another resident added, 8220;As the size of our families increased, there was need to make more rooms. We could not manage to live in the single-storeyed houses.8221;
The condition of the slum, meanwhile, is pitiable with filthy and unhygienic conditions widely prevalent. During the rainy season, the residents often cannot move around due to intense waterlogging.
With as many as four schools and two colleges located in the sector, parking often suffers. College students tend to park their vehicles outside the college gates and, consequently, rows of cars and two-wheelers can be seen parked on the pavements. Besides, with parents picking and dropping their school going children, traffic chaos has become a norm.
