
The polling booths in the state will get electronic eyes 8212; and 3,000 of them 8212; in the forthcoming Assembly elections. Announcing this today, Debashis Sen, the chief electoral officer CEO, said the state government has bought 3,000 digital cameras from Singapore.
Sen said the Election Commission had requested the state government to buy the cameras, 8220;and they have already landed.
They will be installed at various sensitive booths during the elections. The cameras will also be used to record whether voters are carrying Electronic Photo Identity Cards EPIC to the booths.8221;
The idea behind installing the cameras, the CEO said, is to stop false and proxy voting. The photographs will be taken after the identity of a voter is established and ink is applied on the voter8217;s finger. This will be done to stop proxy voting, Sen stressed.
The chief electoral officer also said the Election Commission is trying its best to maximise EPIC coverage of voters. 8216;8216;We have achieved 100 per cent EPIC coverage in Kerala and Pondicherry,8221; he said, 8220;and producing EPIC before casting vote is a must in those two states.
