The Election Commission on Wednesday issued showcause notices to Congress General Secretary B K Hariprasad and Gujarat BJP President Purushottam Rupala for ‘violating’ the Model code of Conduct in Gujarat.
They have been held liable for making comments on ancestry of Nehru Gandhi family and Narendra Modi in their public meetings. Both the leaders have been asked to send their replies explaining why action should not be taken against them by 12 pm on 26th October.
Rupala, at a public meeting at Surat on October 21, allegedly said that members of the Gandhi and Nehru family are progenies of Muslims of Junagadh. Congress’s Hari-prasad, at a public meeting in Valsad district on October 18, allegedly said that Modi did not even know the name of his father.
The Model Code of Conduct expressly prohibits parties or candidates from saying anything on private lives of the leaders or workers of other parties, which is not connected with their public activities.
The code, which is in force from October 10 in the state, provides that “ no party or candidate shall indulge in any activity which may aggravate existing differences or create communal hatred or cause tension between different castes and communities, religious or linguistic. Criticism of other political parties, when made, shall be confined to their policies, past records and work. Criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortion shall also be avoided.
