A day after Uttar Pradesh Police chief Bua Singh sought voluntary retirement as he felt “humiliated” by the EC’s transfer order, the latter on Thursday hinted that more transfers of top bureaucrats of the state were in the offing.

“We have some more cases and we have to look at them and if there are something, nothing prevents us from taking action,” CEC N. Gopalaswamy said.

In response to Singh’s statement of feeling humiliated, the CEC said, “It is a free country. Everyone has a right to expresss his opnion. These transfers were effected on the basis of assessment made by the Commission from time to time.” Asked whether the EC would have given the bureaucrats who were transferred a chance to present their side of the story, Gopalaswamy said, “We cannot be issuing notice (on transfers). The action was taken on the basis of Supreme Court orders. If the orders are properly implemented we would not have to take these actions.”

He said the Commission had “no problem with the state’s administration on the whole.”
