With the debate into the shortcomings of the Office-of-Profit Bill returned by the President still raging outside Parliament, the Election Commission today decided to go ahead with the hearing of petitions seeking disqualification of Samajwadi Party8217;s Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh on June 16. It kept a decision on the petitions against 10 CPIM MPs, including Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, pending.
The date of hearing on the petitions against Amar Singh for holding a Uttar Pradesh Development Council post 8212; alleged to be an office-of-profit by petitioner J N Shukla 8212; was fixed on the basis of the notices issued to him earlier. The President had referred Shukla8217;s petition for the EC8217;s opinion on March 3 this year.
EC sources said Amar Singh had been given time twice before to reply to the notice. However, now, he will have to appear before the EC or send a counsel to present his case.
Incidentally, it was only this week that Jaya Bachchan, another Samajwadi Party leader, was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha after being disqualified by President for holding an office-of-profit. Amar Singh has indicated that he will be responding to the EC notice.
Meanwhile, the CPIM MPs are awaiting a word from the Commission. Sources in the EC said the reply filed by Trinamool Congress8217; Mukul Roy in response to the EC notice to him to provide additional information was 8216;8216;still under consideration8217;8217;. Roy was asked to provide the dates on which the 10 MPs assumed the alleged offices-of-profit. Indications are that Roy has not been able to provide 8216;8216;adequate details8217;8217;. The full Commission is considering whether the petition should be returned to the President without the information or to send further notices for hearing to the parties involved.
