MUMBAI, JANUARY 27: Defending champions’ East Zone beat West Zone by 82 runs in the Vijay Hazare under-16 trophy league match at the Parsee Gymkhana today. Replying to East’s 236-9, West were bowled out for 154 in 40.1 overs.

M Talukdar started the West downfall scalping opener Prashant Joshi (2) with a fine catch off his own bowling. He ended with figures of four for 22. K Saikia took three for his 36. Viraj Awte (31) and Arjun Mistry (29) were the only ones to offer some resistance to the Eastern onslaught.

Earlier West won the toss and elected to field. East started in style with an opening wicket stand of 78 between openers Sourashish Lahiri and Fordin Khan. Lahiri made a gritty half-century before he was bowled by Akhilesh Rana on 66. Fordin also went in similar fashion to Uday Karavdar on 40.

Central down South

Captain Arun Sharma cracked a fine century (129) to take Central Zone to a 148 win over South Zone in the league match for the Vijay Hazare trophy at the Elf Vengsarkar Ground, today.

Sharma, who faced 136 balls, got involved in an opening wicket stand of 70 with Vishnu Joshi, who was run out for 39 (five fours) and a third-wicket century stand worth 120 runs with Parminder Singh (34) to help Central pile up 252 in 48 overs.

South Zone, who had asked Central to bat first on winning the toss, failed miserably and folded up for only 104 in 40 overs. Middle-order batsman Bipin Lal top-scored with 22.

Deepak Chougule (13), Arjun Yadav (17) and left-handed Vidyut Siviramakrishnan (11), who had claimed four wickets for 34 runs with his left-arm spin bowling in the Central innings, were the only other South batsmen to reach double figures.

For Central, medium-pacers Mrityunjay Tripathi (3-27) and Shalabh Shrivastava (2-32) did the bulk of thedamage by sending back the top five batsmen with only 36 on the board.

Central had lost to North by 108 runs in their opening match yesterday while South were thrashed by West Zone.
