OCTOBER 21: Chief fire officer of the Mumbai fire brigade Dr V V Rao 58 died following a cardiac arrest this afternoon. Due to retire this month, Rao had gone to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC headquarters to attend the monthly meeting when he suffered the stroke.

Rao is survived by his wife and two children. While his son is in the United States, his daughter is settled in Hyderabad. Both will be flying into the city tomorrow to attend the funeral scheduled for the evening.

According to BMC officials, Rao arrived early for the meeting at the headquarters and went up to the sixth floor to meet people. Rao complained of breathlessness and uneasiness as soon as he reached the sixth floor and within minutes was lying on the floor. He was rushed to the St George Hospital. He is reported to have died on the way to the hospital.

A highly decorated officer of the Mumbai fire brigade, Rao joined the force in November 1962 as an assistant fire officer. After fire-fighting for 23 years, he waspromoted to the post of deputy chief fire officer in October 1985. He took over the reins of the Mumbai fire brigade in 1997.
