Taking a serious note of schools asking Class IX and XI students to repeat the classes, the Central Board of Secondary Education CBSE has issued notices to the heads of affiliated institutions. In a circular dated September 1, the Board directed schools to stop the practice and create a healthy environment for its students.

The notification reads: 8220;The CBSE has received feedback about certain schools where the authorities forcibly hold back students in Classes IX and XI on various pretexts. The Board requires all heads of institutions to reflect on the long term objectives of imparting holistic education in schools.8221;

The move has been welcomed by teachers. Asked about the practice, Dr Rakesh Sachdeva, principal of DAV Model School, Sector 15, said: 8220;If the child is found to be lagging behind during the half-yearly examinations, we counsel and encourage her to study more, instead of forcing her to drop a year. The Board has taken a step in the right direction as it will help save one year for the child.8221;

Neerja Jain, a teacher at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, said: 8220;Taking an exam is the right of every student and the school authorities do not have any business preventing a child from doing so. Educational institutions should realise their responsibility and in their selfish bid to better their results, not spoil a child8217;s future.8221; The notice further directs schools to address the problem of rising indiscipline among the youth with the help of programmes like the Adolescence Education Programme, Life Skills Programme and the Comprehensive School Health Programme, advocated by the Board.
