MUMBAI, DECEMBER 22: Alleging that overinvoicing in the import of wheat has caused a loss to the country to the tune of Rs 300 crore, Suresh Keswani, a member of the Rajya Sabha demanded a full-fledged discussion on the wheat scam in the Upper House.

In a letter sent to the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Krishan Kant, the MP objected to the manner in which the government "hurriedly snatched" the approval of the House on imposition of 50 per cent of customs duty on import of wheat.

Keswani said it clearly emerged from the Government’s reply that first the wheat was allowed to be imported by the present government without any duty. Later, it imposed duty when there was no gowdowns available to keep the foodgrains and farmers objected to the Government’s insensivity on the issue.

He said that the dealers and power-brokers made a huge profit of Rs 1,000 crore in the wheat deal and a House committee be set up to look into the scam.
