The overview of the all the fad diets that we had a look at over the last few weeks, has one clear message. Often, we seek fancy solutions when simple, uncomplicated, lifestyle changes may do the trick.

When it comes to heart health, it is pertinent to point out the Interheart study on 30,000 people in 52 countries reported in 2004 in The Lancet. The study found nine risk factors related to diet and lifestyle accounted for 94 per cent of the heart attacks in women and 90 per cent of the risk of heart attacks in men. The figures are true for all human races in all parts of the world.

Diet also plays a very important part in the prevention process. A French study recently published in Circulation says heart attack survivors put on a Mediterranean diet were 50-70 per cent less likely to suffer another heart attack.

The message is loud and clear: Simple dietary changes will help prevent heart trouble. I rest my case with some advise straight from the heart:

8226; Eat wisely and pay attention to not only what you exclude but also what to include. Aim to consume 10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Stock up on soy, whole grains and legumes. Fats are an important part of the heart smart diet. Include the good fats 8212; fish, walnuts, flaxseed, peanut. Cut out trans fats by avoiding packaged snacks, bakery items and deep fried foods.

8226; Get moderate, regular exercise. The importance of exercise cannot be over emphsised!

8226; Manage stress effectively

8226; Watch your weight 8212; the intake of too many calories is no good. Keep a check on sugary drinks.

8226; Tobacco products are to be avoided like the plague.
