PUNE, Nov 11: Brig Iqbal Singh, president of the Dehu Road Cantonment Board (DCB) today suggested privatisation of octroi collection following the rising cases of octoi thefts.The Kumari Rajshree Parmar Memorial Foundation had filed a writ petition in Bombay High Court complaining against cases of accidents caused by the octroi check posts located on the Pune-Mumbai highway. As per the directives of the high court, the octroi check posts on the highway would have to be shifted.Accordingly, the cantonment board submitted that the re-classification of land would have to be done to Class `C' from Class `A-1' and a no objection certificate (NOC) would have to be obtained from the military authorities. Simultaneously, a proposal is also to be sent to the Central Government for allotment of a special grant for reconstructing octroi post at a cost of Rs 30 lakh. Brig Singh revealed that around 20 per cent octroi thefts had come to the notice of the authorities.
