The resident doctors of Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University CSMMU on Saturday decided to continue with their strike that they had declared late on Friday night.

Unhappy that their demand for more security cover was not met, the protesting doctors said: 8220;Last month, there were nine instances where attendants of patients attacked us. When we try to protect ourselves, we are branded as inhuman.8221;

On Friday, relatives of a patient had held the doctors responsible for a girl8217;s death and entered into an argument with them. The relatives later lodged an FIR against doctor Durgesh Gupta and a few others.

8220;In the wake of all this, we demanded a security

umbrella, so that we could be saved from the wrath of dissatisfied attendants. For the last few months, we have been asking the hospital authorities to hire a private security agency, but to no avail,8221; said Yogendera, a resident doctor.

8220;Nobody is concerned about the kind of infrastructure in which we function, but if anything happens to any patient, we are immediately held responsible for that,8221; said another doctor. 8220;We are working with a single nurse in a ward, who looks after 36 patients. With such a dearth of manpower, if any casualty happens it is we who are blamed,8221; the doctor added.

The police, meanwhile, gave contradictory statements regarding the condition at the hospital. Superintendent of Police, West, Paresh Pandey said, 8220;We have provided proper security cover to the doctors, as demanded by them and

now everything is normal. Doctors are doing their duties responsibly.8221;

Another police officer, however, said, 8220;The situation is yet to become normal, as emergency, OPD and other significant services are still not functioning properly.8221;

Some of the patients were even referred to other hospitals.

CSMMU Vice-Chancellor Saroj Chooramani, however, claimed that all the doctors have resumed work. She said: 8220;The emergency, trauma, and OPD sections are functioning as usual. There is, however, some problem in the medicine department, as the doctors are yet to get over Friday8217;s incident.8221;

8220;To avoid any unwanted situation we have directed the medicine department to go slow with admitting new patients, until normalcy returns,8221; she further said.

Meanwhile, Pandey said a few patients of the CSMMU have decided to approach Human Rights Commission following the incident where doctors allegedly misbehaved with them and also refused to provide medical services. He also said that no untoward incident was reported on Saturday.
