With the Election Commission ordering a police complaint to be filed against West Bengal Transport Minister Subhash Chakraborty, the CPIM has raised the ante against the EC saying it was adopting 8216;8216;double standards8217;8217; while dealing with complaints of election-related malpractices.
8216;8216;The EC decided on the course of action even before we had sent our reply to its notice on Chakraborty8217;s remarks. If it wanted clarifications, then the commission should have waited for the reply sent by general secretary Prakash Karat,8217;8217; CPIM Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said.
According to him, the EC orders for a police complaint, over a speech in Midnapore where Chakraborty reportedly offended election officials, were given even before Karat8217;s reply was sent to it.
The Left parties had at their meeting with CEC B.N. Tandon on Monday provided details of the election observer in charge of Burdwan allegedly moving in the company of a sitting Trinamool Congress MLA during a visit to the area last month. Yechury said that while the EC was pursuing the case against the Minister, it had not taken any action against its own official.
However, the CPM leader conceded 8216;8216;it would have been better if the remarks had not been made8217;8217;. But, it was in order to explain the party8217;s position that Karat had sent the party8217;s response to the EC.
