NASHIK, July 22: Can a policeman, who has served the force for 33 years, be so terrorised by another individual that he is led to commit suicide? Officials investigating the suicide of police constable Naik Shravan Satva Ahire, who shot himself dead on Tuesday, are baffled over the suicide note found in his person.

The note mentions one quot;Kabhuquot; an abbreviated form of Karbhari, who allegedly posed danger to the deceased. quot;Kabhu is trying to kill me and is going to torture me,quot; the note says. The investigating officers are baffled as inquiries with Ahire8217;s family, colleagues and friends on the identity of Kabhu have drawn a blank.

Ahire had joined the police force as a constable in 1965. In 1996, he was transferred from the control room to the Nashik Road Police Station. From July 6, 1998, he had been assigned duty at the currency notes press, along with two others.

On Tuesday, during the lunch break, Ahire shot himself with his service rifle while sitting on a bench outside the press. His colleagueswere having lunch in the guard room. The bullet went through his chest, killing him on the spot. His colleagues and some workers rushed to him after hearing the gunshot, but he had died instantly.

Ahire hails from Sonaj-Takil village in Malegaon taluka. His wife, Darshana, is employed with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. Their eldest son, Pramod, is a constable at the Nashik rural headquarters while the younger son, Manish, and daughter, Shweta, are college students.

Ahire8217;s elder brother, Pandhirnath, is a retired police inspector, while his younger brother, Uttam, is an assistant police inspector with at Panchavati Police Station.

The Ahire family8217;s close association with the police force has raised questions on the authenticity of the contents of the suicide note. Attempts are being made to trace the elusive quot;Kabhuquot;.
