Raipur, April 25: Vehicular traffic on the busy Malviya Road came to a halt for an hour when a traffic police officer assaulted another officer on Wednesday.
According to eye-witnesses, Traffic Inspector Kamal Singh was proceeding to Kotwali on his vehicle on the Malviya Road at about 7 pm, when Bhojraj Singh, attached to the Mana Police Training Centre as Revenue Inspector, came face to face with him. Soon they started having a heated argument over some matter.
The quarrel reached a flashpoint when Bhojraj allegedly took out his shoes to attack Kamal Singh Thakur who also lost his cool and started beating Singh in full view of the passers-by till Bhojraj was badly injured.
When the news about the two traffic inspectors clash reached the Kotwali Police Station, about half a furlong away from the scene of the incident, a police team rushed to the rescue of the injured police officer and took him to a hospital. However, neither of the officers has lodged a complaint about the incident, police sourcesrevealed.
Thakur later told the reporters that when he was going to the Kotwali Police Station, Bhojraj stopped him in the middle of the road and abused him. He added that even on earlier occasions Bhojraj8217;s conduct towards him was unbecoming of a police officer, as every time they met, Bhojaraj would spit in his direction and many a times he had brandished shoes to him.
Thakur said he had told Bhojraj to behave like a police officer, but he refused to pay heed. Today8217;s provocation was beyond his endurance and he could not help thrashing him up, Thakur said.
Thakur said, since the last few months, Bhojraj had been behaving very weird and badly needs psychiatric treatment. Thakur said he was aware of Bhojraj8217;s disturbed state of mind, but he had no option but to retaliate when Bhojraj displayed his shoes to him in public.
Additional Superintendent of Police also corroborated Thakur8217;s statement saying Bhojraj Singh was suffering from some mental problem and was undergoing treatment. Neither Thakur norBhojraj was drunk at the time of the the incident, he added.
Though, the police department is playing down the the 8220;public brawl8221; between the two officers highlighting the 8220;mental problem8221; factor, ego problems and personality clashes among some officers in the traffic department for plum posts is believed to be the main reason behind the simmering discontent.
