Mumbai8217;s dabbawallas are counted among the smartest management gurus in India. Now meet Samarth Gupta, 25, and Pawan Verma, 30, management graduates from Indian Management Institute, Delhi, who have come up with 8216;Poshan8217;, an initiative that has at its core a network of housewives8212;chosen through a cookery competition8212;who provide healthy vegetarian food to those who don8217;t have access to ghar ka khana.

The idea was conceived in their college days, during lessons in strategy formulation, when the duo realised that the 8220;food industry is never really going to face any sort of recession8221;. This confidence is what made Gupta and Verma give the campus placement interviews a miss. 8220;We wanted to make housewives with good cookery skills financially independent,8221; says Verma. Says Yuvika Chejera, who is part of Poshan8217;s team of 12 housewives, 8220;I did not want my culinary skills to go waste. This is a good way to make use of my free time.8221; The women take turns, with two of them cooking in a day.

Gupta says the service, which hopes to help those who are away from their families feel at home, is 8220;a passion with a purpose8221;. Poshan has a big menu and serves up dishes that are right out of mom8217;s kitchen. There is an assortment of everyday delicacies like rajma chawal, aloo matar, tinde, torai, aloo-gobhi and simple dals. The paneer preparations are not made with heavy gravies and spices, which is how restaurants serve them. 8220;The idea is to provide food that tastes exactly like one8217;s mother would make it, taking care not to make it too oily or spicy,8221; says Verma.

In the age of grab-and-go eateries, these hygienic and nutritional dabbas, priced reasonably at Rs 55, are an ideal alternative to fast food. 8220;Convenience foods don8217;t come cheap and many are bad for health. We have proper quality check systems at the base kitchen and the distribution centres,8221; says Gupta. The base kitchen is in Patpargarj, but the distribution centre is located near Barakhamba Road, Connaught Place, for effective delivery.

The service, which primarily caters to office-goers in and around Connaught Place, delivers more than 200 well-packed boxes of food every day. Expansion plans are in the pipeline. 8220;We are going to cater to other areas in the city soon, and also introduce a dinner facility by November,8221; say Gupta and Verma.

Management gurus with a difference, they are only too happy to share the secret of their success. 8220;Do your work with dedication. We provide food and we take pride in that.8221;
