NEW DELHI, FEB 8: Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna was on Tuesday discharged by the Supreme Court from contempt proceedings initiated against him for his remarks on Almatti Dam over Krishna river despite an express ban by the court against any such remark.
Krishna, who was present before a five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice S B Majmudar, expressed his sincere regret in an affidavit saying his statements about the dam on January 23 8220;were not justified8221; but the remarks were innocent and in no way deliberate.
The bench said, 8220;We accept the statement made in affidavit. Proceedings against condemnor closed.8221;
In a four-page affidavit, Krishna said at the meet-the-press programme organised by Bangalore Press Club in connection with the completion of 100 days in office of his Government: 8220;I did speak about Almatti and this was to refute allegation in some quarters of the opposition in Karnataka that our Government was not protecting the interest of the state adequately in the Almattimatter and were going to compromise with dam at a lower height. I reminded the press that no one8211;not the Union Government or the state Government8211;would disobey the Supreme Court and that we were all governed and were not free to do what we please.
