With the UPA-Left stand-off on the nuclear deal threatening to result in early elections, the Congress on Friday stood firmly behind Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying the deal was in the 8220;national interest8221; and all UPA constituents have supported it.

The party8217;s renewed backing to the PM on the nuclear deal came in the backdrop of CPIM blaming him for the current political crisis and criticising his 8220;renewed bid8221; to go to the IAEA.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister A K Antony met Congress president Sonia Gandhi to reportedly discuss the political situation arising out of the nuclear deal imbroglio. Sonia Gandhi has also called for a meeting of all general secretaries on Saturday.
