With the UPA-Left stand-off on the nuclear deal threatening to result in early elections, the Congress on Friday stood firmly behind Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying the deal was in the “national interest” and all UPA constituents have supported it.
“The Congress rejects the allegations blaming PM Manmohan Singh for the prevailing political crisis. The Congress and all
UPA partners are committed to the nuclear deal,” said AICC spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed.
The party’s renewed backing to the PM on the nuclear deal came in the backdrop of CPI(M) blaming him for the current political crisis and criticising his “renewed bid” to go to the IAEA.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister A K Antony met Congress president Sonia Gandhi to reportedly discuss the political situation arising out of the nuclear deal imbroglio. Sonia Gandhi has also called for a meeting of all general secretaries on Saturday.
