PUNE, July 16: The Pune district Congress committee held a demonstration at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near Pune railway station on Friday morning to protest against the pitiable condition of the Aga Khan palace.

Congress district committee president Mohan Joshi launched a blistering attack against the Sena-BJP alliance government. “If the State Government can spends crores on a Michael Jackson show why can’t it take care of the Aga Khan palace which is a national monument,” he charged.

The Aga Khan palace, which was the residence of Mahatma Gandhi in 1942, has fallen on bad days due to lack of funds. Known as the Gandhi National Memorial a number of historical structures are under threat due to neglect.

Terming the neglect as an affront against the nation, Joshi charged that the alliance government had set a bad precedent by stopping funds for the upkeep of the palace. “The Sena-BJP alliance government tries to portray Nathuram Godse as a national hero while neglecting a monument that housed a man who can be described s the man of the millennium,” said Joshi.
