
PATIALA, Feb 23: The District Congress Committee Urban and the district Youth Congress today organised a mammoth dharna in front of the office of the Municipal Corporation here against the anti-people attitude of the MC.
President of Punjab Youth Congress Devinder Singh Babbu and president of district YC Urban Sanjeev Sharma alleged that corruption was rampant in the corporation. They said the corporation had adopted an indifferent attitude towards the Congress workers and was following the dictates of the Akali Dal.
Niranjan Dass, Suresh Mehra, Kishore Sharma Dahri, Nawab Singh, Manesh, Anil Mehta, said the MC authorities had failed to provide basic amenities to the people and there was resentment against the arbitrary and harsh decisions taken by the corporation. District president of the Congress Committee Urban Ved Parkash Gupta criticising the corporation, appealed to the state government to come to the rescue of the MC facing a financial crunch.
Babbu said the Punjab YC has decided to gherao the MC offices of the state from May. He reiterated that if the corporation authorities as well as the state government failed to mend their ways, the YC would launch an agitation against them.
Other Congress leaders who were present on this occasion were Harjit Singh Sherru, K. K. Sharma, Sanjeev Garg, Balwinder Singh Bedi, Balwinder Kaur, D. C. Sharma, chairman of Punjab Subordinate Services Federation INTUC Darshan Singh Ghuman and Ajay Thapar.
Later, a delegation of Congress leaders presented a memorandum of demands to the corporation authorities at the end of the dharna. Interestingly, the commissioner was not present when the memorandum was handed over to the authorities. The memorandum demanded setting up of a high power official committee including representatives of major political parties as non- official members till the corporation elections. The Congress also appealed to the corporation not to take anti-people decisions in garb of revenue collection.
