The Congress today was caught between Hindutva and secularism over the Kanchi Shankaracharya’s statement yesterday giving the credit to former prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao for installing the idol of Lord Ram at the temple site in Ayodhya in 1992.
The Shankaracharya, at the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of his accession to the Kamakoti Peetham in Kanchi, had said: ‘‘The punya (credit) for installing the idol of Lord Ram goes to Narasimha Rao and to no one else.’’
Indicating the party’s stand on the Seer’s statement, party spokesperson Anand Sharma said: ‘‘Just because we are sharing the same stage, does not mean we share the same perception.’’ When asked specifically, Sharma said there was ‘‘neither consent nor disapproval’’.
Fearing a face-off with the Sangh, the Congress had distanced itself from a dialogue the Kanchi Seer had been holding between the two communities on the Ayodhya dispute. The party also stressed today that the court verdict on the matter should be adhered to.
