LUDHIANA, July 17: Academic life in Punjab and Chandigarh is heading for total disruption as nearly 6,000 college teachers in 200 odd colleges of the state have decided to go on an indefinite strike from August 11 in response to a call given by All India Federation of University and College Teachers Organisations AIFUCTO.
Talking to media persons here today, K.B.S. Sodhi, secretary, Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union PCCTU, said that the teachers will go on a mass casual leave on July 21 to join protest march to Parliament at Delhi and observe stay-in strike on August 4, in their respective colleges.
He regretted that while the pay-scales of all the central and state government employees had been revised since 1996, university and college teachers had been discriminated against by HRD Ministry. He said that the non-acceptance of UGC recommendations by the HRD minister was highly illogical and deplorable.
University Grants Commission was a high-power advisory body set up under the statutes of central government for guidance on all matters relating to higher education. All governments since its establishment had honoured and accepted its recommendations and unprecedented departure made by the new government in regard to its recommendations this time, smacked of their anti-teacher bias, he added. AIFUCTO has issued an appeal to Prime Minister to intervene in the matter in the interest of smooth functioning of the work in universities and colleges of the country.
Patiala: The executive committee of Punjabi University Teachers Association PUTA at its emergency meeting held today under the chairmanship of B.S. Nanda, has decided to participate in the protest march to Parliament at New Delhi on July 21.
Jaswinder Singh, secretary, PUTA, said that this march was being organised by the All India Federation of University and College Teachers Organisations AIFUCTO against the HRD Ministry8217;s negative attitude towards the genuine demands of university and college teachers throughout the country, including UGC recommended new pay-scales and service conditions.
