VADODARA, July 7: Sight of a cobra in the Baroda Central Jail on Monday created a scare among the inmates working in the carpentry section.
Sources said the cobra left his cocoon under the shed and entered the hall, where finished goods are stored. Petrified at the sight, the inmates huddled together to protect themselves.
On being informed, Jail Superintendent R N Meena reached the spot immediately and requisitioned doctors from SSG hospital and chief of Gujarat Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) Snehal Bhatt to catch the reptile.
However, even after four hours’ search the reptile could not be traced in the store room. Sources said the cobra might have escaped from gaps in the wall and disappeared into the nearby open space. Later, the holes were plugged with cement.
The sources added as the low-lying areas in the jail premises were inundated due to incessant rains for the last two days, the cobra might have come out of its hole to protect itself from the heavy rain.
When contacted, Meena confirmed the incident and said that work in the carpentry branch was affected for several hours.
