The Nitish government8217;s decision to disband Justice Amir Das Commission probing the political links of the Ranvir Sena has generated sharp criticism from various quarters. Ranvir Sena, the private army of landlords, is responsible for many Dalit massacres in Bihar.
The government was yet to formally notify disbanding of the Commission, but talking to The Indian Express, Home Commissioner H C Sirohi said that it stands disbanded since its term has not been extended after it ended on January 31, 2006. 8216;8216;It will be notified shortly. The Commission has been disbanded from retrospective effect,8217;8217; said Sirohi.
CPIM-L Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said he would meet the Governor and launch an agitation against the move. He termed the move 8216;8216;undemocratic8217;8217; and said that it was aimed at saving BJP and JDU leaders, who were accused of patronising the Ranvir Sena.
8216;8216;The move is politically motivated. It8217;s an example of how this government is implementing BJP8217;s agenda,8217;8217; he alleged. The Panel was constituted after Laxmanpur Bathe massacre in Bihar in December 1997, when more than 60 Dalits were gunned down by the Ranvir Sena. The then Rabri Devi government constituted the Commission. The Panel was given nine extensions.
8216;8216;The probe was almost complete. At present, I was hearing lawyers from the government side,8217;8217; said Justice Das. Justifying the delay, he said though the Panel was notified in December 1997, he received the letter in March 1998. 8216;8216;The Panel started functioning only in 2001 when I got an office, lawyers, courtroom and employees,8217;8217; he said.
