In a clear snub to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, veteran CPIM leader and former CM Jyoti Basu said here on Friday that the delayed action against five Kolkata Police officials in the Rizwanur Rehman case has tarnished the party8217;s image.
8220;The action should have been taken much earlier. And this delay will dent the image of the party,8221; Basu said after the CPIM Secretariat meeting held at the party state headquarters. He, however, added: 8220;Though late, the step was right.8221;
Asked about Trinamool Congress8217;s reported offer to Rukbanur Rehman, Rizwanur8217;s elder brother, to become a candidate for the party in the next elections, Basu said: 8220;I don8217;t know about this. But our party should stand by their family.8221;
However, Rehman, when contacted, told The Indian Express: 8220;The talk of my becoming a candidate for the TMC is all rubbish. This story is being planted by people who want to dampen our efforts to get justice.8221; On the CBI case filed against the Todis, he said: 8220;We have heard that they have filed a murder case against the Todi family. Let them come and we will tell them how my brother was killed by the Todis.8221;
