NEW DELHI, May 7: Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma inaugurated the nation8217;s first vocational and recreational centre for mentally impaired women in Vasant Vihar today. Nai Disha, a brainchild of the Tamana Special School8217;s founder, Shyama Chona, not only addresses the economic needs of this doubly disadvantaged group of women, but also provides them with an institution where they can enjoy each other8217;s company.

The institution will admit batches of 20 women for short durations and teach them vocational as well as social skills. It will also have a thrift centre to enable its residents to collect used items from people and re-sell them for a profit.

The idea, according to Chona is to make these young women self-sufficient as their parents grow old.
