VADODARA, Nov 22: In an effort to conserve classic recordings dating back to the early part of the century, M S University authorities have succeeded in their first-ever attempt to convert music recorded on old spool tapes, which were found at the Faculty of Performing Arts here, into digital form. A hearing session of the re-touched recordings was held here on Monday.

Earlier, MSU authorities had concluded that that these spools, which had been lying unused in the archives for almost 40 years, could be heard only if they were digitally re-mastered and circulated in the market to benefit those interested in good music.

As the equipment in which these spools could be heard was also unavailable, they could not be played regularly, and had fallen into disuse.

University Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane said the data from the spools was stored in computer hard discs with the help of two experts and the Performing Arts dean. While the MSU would keep the master copy, any company could make copies for marketing after paying a royalty, he added. The programme of converting the spools into discs was initiated under the Campus Diversity Programme, he added.
