CHANDIGARH, Aug 9: The causeway between the Railway Station and Industrial Area Phase-I was inaugurated today by UT Administrator Lt Gen B.K.N. Chhibber retd.

The causeway, located near the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking CTU workshop, has been constructed at a cost of Rs 25 lakh. The 130-feet long three-lane carriageway will reduce the burden of traffic on the Chandigarh-Panchkula road.

Speaking on the occasion, Chhibber expressed satisfaction at the pace of development going on in the City after the formation of the Municipal Corporation. He said the construction of the causeway was among the 18-point programme he had marked for Chandigarh. He urged that special stress should be laid upon raising the level of education in government schools.

Mayor of the Corporation Gian Chand Gupta said that many roads on the southern sectors have been recarpeted and work on the others would be taken up after the monsoon. He suggested that there should be transparency in development works and a board should be installed near the site for depicting the specification of work.

He called upon the councillors and the residents to supervise the working of the works in their area. Jagdish Sagar, Adviser to the Administrator, said that permission had been received from the Union government for constructing an additional road through forest land for connecting Chandigarh and Panchkula. The Administration had earlier written to the Centre regarding its plans for constructing three more alternative roads to Panchkula which partly passed through forest land.

Earlier, the Adviser inaugurated the tree plantation drive in Sector 37 by planting a sapling. The Corporation plans to plant 52,00 saplings along the roads, open spaces, parks, shopping centres, Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra and along the choes in Sector 16 and 30.
