CHENNAI, JUNE 21: Head constable K Sivachalam of Velacherry police station in Chennai who lost his left palm and left foot in an accidental bomb blast on March 23 was provided with an ex-gratia of Rs 75,000 by the government.

DGP F C Sharma presented the amount on Saturday at his office in the presence of Chennai Police Commissioner P Kalimuthu.

On March 23, 1998, the cop was standing near scientific assistant Bharathan, who was defusing 14 country bombs seized by the Velacherry police.

Accidentally one bomb fell down and exploded in which Sivachalam sustained serious injuries in the left hand and leg. Later, a portion of his hand and leg had to be amputated.

The government gesture came two days after The Indian Express, Chennai, published a report June 18 detailing the plight of the constable.
